The Sound of Taiwan

Hokkien pop, sung in Taiwanese Hokkien and long popular among older and working-class listeners, carries a strong Japanese enka influence from decades of cultural exchange. Alongside it, Taiwan's Indigenous peoples — including the Amis, Bunun, Paiwan, Rukai and Tsou — maintain distinct polyphonic vocal traditions that nearly disappeared under assimilation pressure before undergoing a genuine renaissance since the late 20th century, now carried into the mainstream through Taiwanese Indigenous pop, which blends contemporary production with native Austronesian language and cultural identity.

A polyphonic vocal tradition nearly lost to assimilation, then deliberately revived and carried into modern pop rather than left as a museum piece, is exactly the kind of renewal worth celebrating rather than treating as a footnote. Taiwanese artists working in Hokkien pop, Indigenous pop, or any contemporary style are welcome to bring their music to a global audience here.
